Senator Genevieve Whitaker and Staff were invited to the Division of Library, Archives, and Museums, “Talking Books Library Book Club with Nina Garcia” on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Challenge. Nina Garcia has created a book club where everyone, including people with disabilities, can connect and support each other through outreach. Senator Genevieve Whitaker has supported Ms. Garcia’s book club meetings, as she attended the last club meeting on October 4, 2021. The book club held several conversations that tackled several topics, specifically the book “All That She Carried” by Tiya Miles.
This book tells the journey of nine-year-old Ashley Sack, who was born to an enslaved mother who provided her daughter with a sack filled with a few precious items to ensure her survival, to later be separated from her mother and sold. Senator Franklin Johnson was also in attendance engaging with everyone there and providing his own insights on topics discussed. In continuance, Senator Whitaker encourages the community to visit the library or contact Nina Garcia at (340) 718-2250 or email nina.garcia@DPNR.VI.GOV for more information. Additionally, the senator will continue to be an advocate for persons with disabilities to ensure their voices are heard in all aspects of improving productivity in the United States of the Virgin Islands.
